Good word-reading ability begins with well established letter reading. Learning the alphabet is a challenge for many young children. Using multisensory, structured, sequential instruction provides a strong foundation of letter knowledge that is required to support good word reading.
Take Flight and Build are two programs that interventionists here at DES use to provide the multisensory and structured instruction needed to build that strong alphabet foundation. Each lesson begins with an alphabet activity that provides repeated exposure to the letters of the alphabet building that needed foundation.

“RAP”ing our way through intervention!

One of our small group intervention programs, Take Flight, is utilized for students who need targeted, rigorous instructional interventions in reading. We use Repeated Accurate Practice pages [RAP]. This starts with visual recognition of the printed letter, its name, and most common sound. Then, we advance to whole words and phrases to improve reading speed while maintaining accuracy. Practice promotes quick, effortless reading of easily confused or similar words, improving their fluency.

Additionally, students manage their goals by setting a timer and keeping record of their readings between quick assessments. They are always amazed at their growth by the end of the cycle!

Our DeWitt ABC Preschool Program has been learning all about community helpers. We had visitors from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the DeWitt Police Department visit our classroom recently and tell us all about the important and helpful things they do for our community. We enjoyed their visit, but we especially liked Milo and Lainey!

Princess Beatrice of the United Kingdom said , "Dyslexia is not a pigeonhole to say you can't do anything. It is an opportunity and a possibility to learn differently".

Dyslexia awareness is important for our students, because a child's potential isn't diminished by dyslexia; instead, it highlights the need for different learning strategies and the celebration of creativity and problem-solving skills within the educational environment.

Mrs. Mandy’s classes recently celebrated Constitution Day on September 17th as part of “Celebrate Freedom Week”. They learned about the sacrifices made for freedom and the values on which our country was founded. Each class created their own “Classroom Constitution” and signed it to signify their commitment to having a successful learning experience this school year.

Attention Preschool Families:

When dropping off or picking up your preschool student, please park in a DES designated parking space in our parking lot. We have friends and family members parking illegally when dropping off or picking up students and this causes congestion and blocks drivers coming in and out of the parking lot.

Thank you ~ Carrie Ashcraft, DES Preschool Director
