DeWitt School District art teachers Terran Henderson and Joli Holzhauer received grants from Thea Foundation’s Art Closet to purchase supplies for their classrooms. Terran Henderson, DeWitt High School, received $2,442 worth of ceramic supplies including sculpting and pottery tools, banding wheels, paintbrushes, and a large variety of glazes and underglazes that will be used towards ceramic making and glaze experimentation. Joli Holzhauer, DeWitt Elementary, received $649 worth of clay, glazes, and tools for fifth grade artists to learn basic ceramics.
Henderson and Holzhauer attended the Arkansas Art Educators Fall Conference in November where they earned professional development hours in the field, mingled with fellow art teachers from around the state, and participated in many hands-on art-making workshops. During the conference, the teachers made contact with Thea Foundation’s executive director, Nick Leopoulos, who encouraged them to apply for grant monies.
“It is very encouraging to spend time with people who value arts education,” said Holzhauer. “This gift from Thea Foundation will help us get ceramics going again at DeWitt Elementary, and our students are the ones who benefit.”
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the Thea Foundation. These supplies are much needed in the high school art room. Our students are already so excited to create clay objects and experiment with finishes,” Henderson said. “Every time I attend the Arkansas Art Educators’ Conference, I leave with more invaluable information and experiences that are so beneficial to me and my students, and I am so thankful.”
Thea Foundation was established over twenty years ago in memory of Thea Leopoulos by her family to give scholarships and supplies to students who are positively impacted through the arts. For more information, visit theafoundation.org.
