The work of ten DeWitt Elementary art students was recently entered into the Eastern Regional Youth Art Show and Contest sponsored by the Arkansas Art Educators Association. The artwork was on display at East Arkansas Community College in Forest City during the month of April. A reception and awards ceremony was held on April 27, 2023, and eight DES students received placements in their categories. Cecily Boucher received second place in the kindergarten category; Declan Mora, second place in first grade; Armani Clay, second place in second grade; Presley Burnett, fourth place in second grade; Caroline West, second place in third grade; Kara Mathis, second place in fourth grade; Jacquelin Ballon, fourth place in fourth grade; and Jeremiah Page received the first place “Best of Show” award for fifth grade. “I am very proud of these students for their creativity,” said art teacher Joli Holzhauer. “It is an honor just to be selected to participate in the show.” The Eastern Region consists of ten counties, and art teachers from the schools in these districts are allowed to select only ten pieces of art for entry. “I tried to select ten pieces that represent a range of work produced during the school year. The selections include collage, drawing, painting, and print-making techniques.” Best of Show winners from the regional show move on to the AAE State Art Show in Little Rock. Jeremiah Page’s artwork will be on display at the Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Learning Center during the month of June. Armani Clay 's artwork pictured is a self-portrait in watercolors. The pictured artwork of Jeremiah Page is a mixed-media creation inspired by the work of American neo-expressionist artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
