4th & 5th Grade PE students have been learning the parts of a compass, the basics of using a compass. They have learned how to both find a bearing and take a bearing and how to navigate a basic compass course!
Compass skills are a great tool for anyone who loves to be active outside! From hiking, to hunting to participating in orienteering competitions, the knowledge of how to use a compass can be vital in an emergency or for use for fun!
They have also had the opportunity to learn some basic knots that are great for use in outdoor activities, setting up a campsite, and other outdoor pursuits.
These lessons are all part of our Outdoor and Conservation Programming and are just one of the many reasons DES was named an AGFC School of Conservation Leadership!

Mrs. Teesa's 4th grade "engineers" have been studying electricity in class. This week they learned how to build a simple electrical system!
First Electric linemen braved the weather to open car doors and greet DeWitt Elementary students Thursday morning. Because of their help, many teachers and students were saved from getting drenched in the pouring rain. Thank you to First Electric for supporting our students and staff!

I truly appreciate your patience and support as we settle into our new routines and procedures.
To help keep things running smoothly, here are a few important reminders:
Please remember we are a Peanut/Nut free school.
Morning Drop-Off: Please do not drop off students before 7:30 AM, as staff are not on duty to supervise before that time.
Crosswalk Safety: Be sure to yield to Pre-K students and families at the crosswalk.
Late Arrivals: If you arrive after 8:05 AM, please come into the office to sign your child in.
Transportation Changes: Any changes must be called in by 1:30 PM so we can ensure a safe and smooth dismissal.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m happy to help.

All incoming Kindergarten Students will need a nap mat. Parents can help their child bring in the nap mat on the first day of school if it was not brought to open house.
School Zone & Car Line Reminders:
1) There are THREE cross walks at DES, one in the middle of the front drive and one near the end by the Preschool Entrance, and one between the elementary cafeteria and high school gym. Please make sure that you are driving slowly and STOPPING for pedestrians in the crosswalk.
2) Arkansas Code 27-51-1609 states that "a driver of a motor vehicle shall not use a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle when passing a school building or school zone during school hours when children are present and outside the building.”
Arkansas Act 37 defines a handheld wireless telephone as a wireless interactive communication device with which a user engages in wireless interactive communication using at least one hand.
Please help keep our students safe and stay off the phone while in the school zone.

We’re thrilled to share that Phase 1 of the Pollinator Patio & Flyway at DeWitt Elementary School is officially complete! 💚
Thanks to our amazing community, students, staff, and volunteers, this new outdoor classroom is now buzzing with life — from beautiful plants and bird baths to hummingbird feeders, bat boxes, and more!
This space is designed to support wildlife 🦋 and inspire young minds 🌱. And we’re just getting started! Future plans include adding toad abodes, native plants, and even MORE ways to support pollinators.
🌍 Our goal? To have the space recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat by the Nature Conservancy.
📸 Come check it out and watch as we grow a better world — one plant, one pollinator, one student at a time.
